AI AND TRUST: HOW DO WE KNOW WHEN TO RELY ON ALGORITHMS?
Artificial intelligence has become a pervasive decision partner — recommending what we read, routing our travel, screening CVs, and even assisting in medical diagnoses. Yet trust in AI is uneven. People readily accept a GPS’s detour suggestion but hesitate when an algorithm offers financial or legal advice. Some drivers have followed satnav directions so blindly that they’ve ended up in lakes or driving the wrong way down motorways, whilst others refuse to trust highly accurate medical AI systems (see Fact-Check). Why do we calibrate trust differently across contexts, and how should we decide when reliance on AI is justified?
The Psychology of Trust
In human relationships, trust emerges from repeated interaction, transparency, and shared norms. Cognitive science shows that trust is not only rational but also affective: we trust others when they seem predictable, benevolent, and aligned with our goals. When your colleague consistently delivers quality work and shows concern for shared outcomes, trust develops naturally through experience.
With AI, this foundation is disrupted. Algorithms may be highly accurate yet opaque. They lack intent, empathy, or accountability, but they are often treated as if they possessed these qualities. This creates what we might call the “trust paradox” - systems that can process information far more comprehensively than humans, yet lack the emotional and moral framework that typically underpins our trust relationships.
This mismatch creates fragile trust patterns: either overtrust (automation bias), where people defer excessively to algorithmic recommendations, or undertrust (algorithm aversion), where effective systems are ignored or overridden. We see automation bias when investors blindly follow algorithmic trading recommendations without considering market context, and algorithm aversion when doctors ignore AI diagnostic aids that could improve patient outcomes.
Signals of Trustworthiness in AI
What makes us trust an AI system? Research identifies several key factors that influence our willingness to rely on algorithmic decisions:
Transparency. Explainable AI provides insight into how outputs are generated. Even partial interpretability can increase calibrated trust. When Netflix explains that it recommended a film “because you watched similar comedies,” this transparency helps calibrate expectations. Medical AI systems that highlight which features in an X-ray led to a diagnosis help radiologists understand and verify the reasoning.
Reliability. Demonstrated consistency across contexts fosters confidence. Medical imaging AI, for example, earns trust through rigorous benchmarking against thousands of cases with known outcomes. Google Translate gained widespread adoption not through perfect accuracy, but through consistent performance across languages and contexts that users could verify.
Alignment. Trust deepens when systems reflect human values and goals, not just raw optimisation. Value-sensitive design emphasises this principle. A hiring algorithm that consistently selects qualified candidates whilst maintaining fairness across demographic groups demonstrates alignment with organisational values beyond mere efficiency.
Accountability. Users are more likely to trust AI when oversight mechanisms clarify responsibility for errors or misuse. When an AI system makes a mistake, who is responsible? Systems with clear audit trails, human oversight, and error correction mechanisms inspire more confidence than black-box systems with unclear governance.
The Paradox of Overtrust and Distrust
This brings us to a crucial paradox in AI adoption: too little trust leads to wasted potential, as humans override or ignore effective systems, whilst too much trust creates risks of delegation without oversight.
Consider autonomous emergency braking in cars. Undertrust might lead drivers to disable a system that could save lives, but overtrust might cause them to drive more recklessly, assuming the car will always prevent accidents. Similarly, in finance, undertrust might cause traders to ignore valuable algorithmic insights, whilst overtrust might lead to systemic risks when multiple firms rely on similar models without understanding their limitations.
Striking a balance requires calibrated trust - aligning the level of reliance with empirical evidence of system performance. This isn’t a one-time assessment but an ongoing relationship that evolves with experience and changing circumstances.
Towards Responsible Reliance
How can we develop more sophisticated approaches to AI trust? Several principles emerge from research and practical experience:
Context Matters. Trust should be domain-specific. A recommender system’s occasional errors are tolerable; errors in autonomous driving or healthcare are not. The stakes, reversibility, and human oversight capabilities all influence appropriate trust levels. Spotify’s music recommendations can be wrong without serious consequences, but medical diagnostic AI requires much higher standards and human verification.
Design for Calibration. Interfaces should reveal confidence levels, uncertainty, and error margins, helping users form appropriate reliance. Weather forecasts excel at this: “60% chance of rain” communicates uncertainty better than “it will rain.” AI systems should similarly express confidence levels, helping users understand when to rely on predictions and when to seek additional information.
Dynamic Trust. Trust must evolve as systems learn and adapt. Continuous monitoring and updating are essential. An AI system that performed well six months ago might now be unreliable due to changing data patterns or concept drift. Users need feedback mechanisms to recalibrate their trust based on ongoing performance.

Unlike human relationships, where trust develops through emotional connection and shared understanding, AI trust must be built on transparency, performance, and clear limitations.
Practical Guidelines for AI Trust
For individuals navigating AI-assisted decisions, several practical strategies can help:
Start with low-stakes decisions. Build familiarity with AI systems in contexts where errors have minimal consequences before relying on them for critical choices.
Seek multiple sources. Don’t rely on a single algorithmic recommendation for important decisions. Cross-check with other systems, human expertise, or your own analysis.
Understand limitations. Every AI system has boundaries. Understanding what a system cannot do is as important as knowing its capabilities.
Monitor performance. Pay attention to when systems succeed and fail. This helps calibrate appropriate trust levels over time.
Trust in AI is neither blind faith nor blanket scepticism. It is an ongoing negotiation between human users and algorithmic tools, requiring us to develop new frameworks for assessing reliability in systems that lack human emotional and moral foundations.
By focusing on transparency, accountability, and calibration, we can move from vague unease to structured reliance. In doing so, we treat AI not as an oracle, but as a fallible partner - one whose usefulness depends on our ability to know when, and how much, to trust.
The goal isn’t to achieve perfect trust, but appropriate trust: sufficient reliance to benefit from AI’s capabilities whilst maintaining healthy scepticism about its limitations. As AI systems become more sophisticated and ubiquitous, this calibrated approach to trust becomes not just useful but essential for navigating an algorithmic world.
